UNEA-7 Preparations Highlight Global Environmental Action Plans

MUSCAT: The Sub-Committee of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) convened in Nairobi to review UNEP’s performance and outline its 2026–2029 strategy. Delegates assessed existing frameworks, explored ways to strengthen financial resources, and began drafting proposals for resolutions to be considered at the seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). The discussions underscored the need for collective multilateral action in addressing global environmental challenges.

In a video message, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and President of the upcoming UNEA-7, emphasized the assembly’s critical role as a platform for international cooperation. He urged member states to pursue practical and time-bound outcomes, stressing that UNEA-7 should set a clear course for impactful solutions to pressing environmental issues. His remarks reflected a commitment to ensuring the assembly produces results beyond statements of intent.

Dr. Al Amri also highlighted the importance of early consultations among stakeholders and recognized the UNEP Secretariat’s efforts in engaging member states. He pointed to the September 29, 2025, deadline for submission of proposals, urging governments and institutions to contribute actively. He further emphasized the significance of regional forums, such as the African Ministers of Environment Conference (AMCEN) and the Asia-Pacific Forum, in promoting consensus and shared responsibility in shaping environmental policies.

Looking ahead, Dr. Al Amri called for an ambitious yet practical declaration to emerge from UNEA-7, focusing on implementation rather than rhetoric. He stressed the need for strong alignment between parliaments, governments, and international bodies to drive action and accountability. The message conveyed was clear: only through unified, coordinated, and well-structured efforts can the global community effectively confront environmental crises and pave the way toward sustainable development.
