Trade Unions Take Key Role In Anti-Trafficking Campaign

MUSCAT: The Federation has emphasized the critical role of trade unions in combating human trafficking through active engagement and awareness initiatives. One of their primary responsibilities is to educate workers about the risks and forms of human trafficking, ensuring they can identify and avoid exploitation. Awareness campaigns help empower workers by providing the knowledge needed to protect themselves and report suspicious activities promptly. This proactive approach is considered vital to prevent trafficking before it occurs and safeguard the rights of vulnerable individuals within the workforce.

In addition to awareness, trade unions are expected to closely monitor employers’ compliance with national labour laws, regulations, and enforceable decisions related to worker protection. Regular oversight ensures that businesses operate ethically and within the boundaries of the law, reducing opportunities for trafficking-related abuses. By holding employers accountable, unions contribute to maintaining a fair work environment and deterring any attempts to exploit workers for illegal or unethical purposes.

Trade unions are also advocating for the integration of ethical labour principles into employment contracts, ensuring that workers’ rights are respected from the outset of employment. This step not only strengthens contractual obligations but also aligns with international labour standards that promote fairness and dignity in the workplace. Encouraging ethical practices at the contractual stage helps prevent conditions that could lead to human trafficking and related violations, reinforcing the culture of compliance within organizations.

Furthermore, unions play an essential role in reporting violations and suspected trafficking cases to the relevant authorities. Coordinating with enforcement agencies ensures that reports are acted upon quickly and effectively, minimizing harm to potential victims. This collaborative mechanism forms part of a wider strategy to combat trafficking under the ‘Aman’ campaign, a three-month national initiative launched on July 30 to coincide with World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. By engaging all stakeholders, including trade unions, the campaign aims to strengthen Oman’s collective efforts to eliminate human trafficking and protect the fundamental rights of all workers.
