MUSCAT: Oman’s low-cost carrier SalamAir has strengthened its fleet with the addition of a new Airbus A321neo aircraft, named “Barr Al-Hikman” after the scenic coastal destination. This expansion brings the airline’s total fleet to 15 aircraft and represents a significant step in its long-term growth strategy. The new jet is part of SalamAir’s ongoing commitment to providing affordable air travel while promoting Oman’s tourism and aviation sectors, reflecting the airline’s ambition to enhance connectivity and support national economic goals under Oman Vision 2040.
Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khonji, Chairman of SalamAir, highlighted that the milestone signifies the start of a strategic plan to expand the fleet to 25 aircraft by 2028. He emphasized that partnerships between public and private sectors are vital for advancing the tourism industry. Since 2024, SalamAir has focused on serving underserved destinations, aiming to position Oman as a regional aviation hub amid growing global travel demand, while creating more opportunities for domestic tourism growth and economic diversification.
Adrian Hamilton-Manns, CEO of SalamAir, noted that the arrival of the 15th aircraft marks a new phase of growth, enabling the airline to launch additional routes and increase capacity on high-demand destinations, including Salalah. The airline’s discounted domestic fares, starting at OMR 9.99, have stimulated domestic travel demand, strengthening SalamAir’s position as a leading low-cost carrier in the region. Plans include increased frequencies to Nairobi, new destinations in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia, resumed flights to Beirut, expansion into Saudi Arabia with Abha, and a new route to Medan, Indonesia.
The expansion is also set to generate over 182 new jobs, increasing the workforce by 24% to more than 750 employees, further supporting Oman’s economy. SalamAir currently operates over 80 daily flights with its Airbus A320/A321 fleet and anticipates carrying more than 4 million passengers in 2025, a 25% rise compared to 3.2 million in 2024. This growth reflects the airline’s strategy to enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and contribute to Oman’s broader economic diversification objectives.
