MUSCAT: The Public Prosecution in Muscat has outlined a series of protective measures aimed at safeguarding victims and witnesses during investigations and trials related to human trafficking. Central to these measures is ensuring that victims are fully informed of their legal rights in a language they understand, allowing them to communicate their physical, psychological, legal, and social conditions effectively. This approach is intended to empower victims and facilitate their participation in legal processes while respecting their dignity and personal circumstances.
Victims requiring specialized care or shelter are to be promptly referred to the appropriate authorities, who may place them in medical or psychological rehabilitation centres, care homes, or other suitable residential facilities. This provision underscores the commitment to comprehensive support for victims, addressing not only their immediate safety but also their longer-term recovery and rehabilitation needs. Such arrangements reflect the importance of a holistic approach to victim protection in line with national and international standards.
The notice also emphasizes the importance of providing adequate protection to victims or witnesses whenever necessary, including allowing them to remain within the Sultanate if required for the ongoing investigation or trial. This flexibility is granted under orders from the Public Prosecution or the court and highlights the priority given to maintaining their safety and cooperation throughout the legal proceedings. These measures aim to build confidence in the justice system and ensure effective prosecution of human trafficking offenses.
As part of the Aman campaign, which runs for three months, these protective actions complement broader efforts to raise public awareness, enhance prevention strategies, support victims, and strengthen cooperation at both national and international levels. By reinforcing these protective frameworks, Oman is demonstrating its strong commitment to combating human trafficking and upholding the rights and safety of all individuals, as guaranteed by Article 5 of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law.
