MUSCAT: As part of its implementation of the third phase of Ministerial Decision No. 8/2024, the Environment Authority has launched an awareness campaign aimed at promoting the reduction of plastic shopping bag usage in North Al Sharqiyah. The campaign, led by the Environment Department in the governorate, kicked off with visits to key traditional markets, beginning with the ‘Thursday Market’ in Sinaw and continuing next week to cover markets in Wadi Bani Khalid, Al Mudhaibi, Bidiyah, Ibra, Al Qabil, and Dima wa Al-Ta’een. These visits are designed to reach vendors and shoppers directly, using market days as strategic touchpoints for engagement.
The initiative seeks to educate the public on the environmental impact of plastic bags and encourages the transition to eco-friendly alternatives. By targeting both commercial outlets and traditional markets, the campaign aims to instill long-term behavioural change and raise awareness about sustainable consumer practices. Mohammed Amer Al Hajri, Director of the Environment Department, highlighted the campaign’s goal to build a culture of environmental responsibility among all segments of society.
As part of the outreach, multilingual brochures in Arabic, English, and Urdu are being distributed to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for a diverse population. Reusable bags are also being handed out to both shop owners and customers, offering practical alternatives while reinforcing the campaign’s core message. This approach not only spreads awareness but also empowers communities to make environmentally conscious decisions.
Youth participation is a key element of the campaign, with students from local higher education institutions involved through the environmental student council. Their engagement reflects a broader strategy to involve younger generations in environmental stewardship and to foster community-based solutions to ecological challenges. The Environment Authority confirmed that similar initiatives will continue in other areas of the governorate, reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable Oman.
