Oman’s OCCI Tourism Committee Drives Sustainable Economic Innovation and Growth

MUSCAT: The Tourism Committee of Oman’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), chaired by Dr. Suhaim bint Ahmed Al Harthi, convened a strategic meeting to address the challenges facing the tourism sector and foster innovation. The committee discussed various initiatives aimed at improving the services provided to tourists and enhancing the overall competitiveness of the sector, both regionally and internationally. One key focus was on reorganizing the role of tourism agents and ensuring that they are better equipped to serve visitors. The committee also introduced measures to develop Omani talent, particularly in the area of tourism guidance.

To bolster the local tourism workforce, the committee proposed halting the issuance of new visas for foreign tour guides and instead focused on introducing educational programs in key international languages, such as Chinese, French, German, and Italian. A new job title, “Masar Guide,” was suggested to provide seasonal job opportunities for Omanis and encourage greater local involvement in the tourism industry. The committee’s efforts are expected to have a positive impact on Oman’s tourism sector by creating more opportunities for local talent while also enhancing the experience for international visitors.

The meeting also spotlighted various upcoming initiatives aimed at attracting more tourists to Oman, including plans for summer initiatives and events that showcase Muscat’s unique charm. Furthermore, the committee discussed the organization of a major tourism sector forum in February, which will serve as a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas and discuss the future of Oman’s tourism industry. The committee also proposed hosting a cultural day during Ramadan in collaboration with foreign embassies, blending global cultures with the rich traditions of Oman.

Dhofar Governorate’s tourism potential was also a key topic of discussion, with plans to promote the “Sarb” and “Frankincense” seasons through innovative media campaigns. Additionally, the committee discussed preparations for the “Tourism Walk” event in Nizwa this December, which aims to highlight Oman as a premier tourist destination. The committee emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving sustainable growth and development in the tourism sector, with the active participation of both local businesses and government institutions.

Dr. Suhaim bint Ahmed Al Harthi praised the collaborative efforts and innovative approaches brought to the table, emphasizing that the continued development of Omani talent and the implementation of new strategies will be key to the future success of Oman’s tourism industry. The committee’s proactive measures and strategic vision aim to position Oman as a leading tourism destination in the region, attracting more visitors and fostering long-term growth.
