Oman’s Electricity Production Rises While Water Output Declines

MUSCAT: Preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) reveals that Oman’s net electricity production grew by 8.7 percent during the reporting period, reaching 29,308.6 GWh compared to 26,972.2 GWh in the same period last year. This figure includes electricity purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) and the Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAEC) across various regions. Analysts attribute this rise to increased demand from both residential and industrial sectors, alongside ongoing efforts to enhance the Sultanate’s energy infrastructure and diversify power generation sources.

In contrast, total water production across Oman experienced a slight decline of 0.8 percent as of the end of July 2025. Output stood at approximately 298.94 million cubic meters, down from 301.24 million cubic meters during the same period in 2024. Officials note that this small decrease highlights the need for ongoing conservation measures and efficient resource management, particularly as the country continues to grow in population and industrial activity. These trends underline the importance of sustainable practices in balancing supply with increasing demand.

At the governorate level, Muscat saw the most noticeable decrease in water production, with an 8.1 percent drop to 122.39 million cubic meters from 133.19 million cubic meters a year earlier. Authorities link this decline to a combination of lower rainfall levels and maintenance schedules affecting some desalination plants. The drop has prompted renewed calls for investments in advanced water treatment technologies and infrastructure upgrades to ensure long-term supply stability for both residential and commercial needs in the capital region.

Meanwhile, Dhofar Governorate registered a 3 percent increase in water production, reaching 43.93 million cubic meters. Water production in the remaining governorates also rose by 5.8 percent, demonstrating a mixed but overall stable national performance in water management. This growth outside the capital reflects successful regional efforts to expand production capacity and improve distribution networks, helping meet the needs of growing communities and industries while supporting Oman’s broader sustainability goals.
