Oman To Launch Major Green Hydro Projects In Al Wusta, Dhofar

MUSCAT: Eng. Abdul Aziz bin Saeed Al Shidhani, the General Manager of Hydrom, announced plans to allocate at least two new areas for green hydrogen projects in Oman’s Al Wusta and Dhofar Governorates. This initiative is part of a new round aimed at attracting a wider range of investors. The areas to be designated for these projects will vary in size, encouraging participation from diverse markets, including countries like China, the United States, and several European and Asian nations that haven’t previously engaged in such investments.

The new approach to land allocation comes after assessing the challenges of the green hydrogen sector, including fluctuating markets, political instability, and technological barriers. Al Shidhani highlighted that overcoming these hurdles is possible through technological advancements, financial innovation, and economies of scale, which are all working to reduce the production costs associated with green hydrogen. These innovations are expected to further bolster the sector’s growth and competitiveness in the international market.

On a global scale, demand for green hydrogen is on the rise, driven largely by the implementation of supportive government policies in countries like Germany, Japan, and South Korea. These countries have recognized the environmental benefits of green hydrogen, and as a result, have made significant investments to promote its use. Oman’s strategic position as a hub for green hydrogen production positions it to meet this growing demand and become a key player in the global market.

The green hydrogen projects in Al Wusta and Dhofar are part of Oman’s broader vision to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce its reliance on traditional fossil fuels. By tapping into the potential of green hydrogen, Oman aims to contribute to the global effort in achieving carbon-neutral goals. This development is expected to attract international investors and boost the local economy, further cementing Oman’s role as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
