Oman Renewable Energy Share Rises To 11.5 Percent

MUSCAT: Oman has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, with the share of renewables in electricity production reaching 11.5% as of May. This progress aligns with the national strategy aimed at achieving 30% renewable energy contribution by 2030 and an ambitious 60% by 2040. The growth reflects the country’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting sustainability as part of Oman Vision 2040. The Ministry of Energy and Minerals has highlighted that this achievement is a result of sustained investments and policy support for clean energy projects.

Over the past few years, Oman has witnessed accelerated development in renewable energy projects, including major solar and wind power initiatives. Among the key operational projects are the Dhofar 1 Wind Farm, the Ibri 2 Solar Plant, and the Manah 1 and Manah 2 Solar Plants. These projects not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also strengthen Oman’s position as a leader in renewable energy within the region. Such efforts are part of broader energy transition strategies that ensure long-term energy security while meeting global sustainability goals.

Looking ahead, the Sultanate plans to award contracts for several large-scale projects within this year. These include the 500-megawatt Ibri 3 Solar Plant, the 100-megawatt Jalan Bani Bu Ali Wind Farm, and the 120-megawatt Dhofar 2 Wind Farm. In addition, projects like the 90-megawatt Sadah Wind Farm, the 300–400-megawatt Mahout Wind Farms, and the 280-megawatt Al Kamil Solar Plant are in the pipeline. Collectively, these initiatives will further accelerate Oman’s progress toward its 2030 and 2040 renewable energy targets, contributing to economic diversification and job creation.

Renewable energy development in Oman is not just about meeting energy targets; it is central to the country’s economic and environmental sustainability. By expanding clean energy capacity, Oman aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, preserve natural resources, and position itself as a regional hub for green energy. The government continues to prioritize this sector across its governorates, ensuring a balanced approach to development while addressing future energy needs and fostering sustainable growth.
