MUSCAT: Oman head coach Rasheed Jaber remains confident that his team can go all the way in the ongoing 26th Gulf Cup Football Championship, after securing an important 1-1 draw against the UAE. The draw helped Oman confirm their place in the semifinals, where they are set to face Saudi Arabia on December 31. Despite facing a tough challenge against the UAE, Jaber expressed his belief in the capabilities of his players, stating that they are ready to battle for the title. The team’s recent performances have instilled confidence that they can continue their successful run in the tournament.
The match against the UAE was not without its difficulties. Oman struggled in the first half, as the UAE’s Yahya Al Ghassani scored early in the 20th minute, putting pressure on the Omani squad. However, Oman gradually regained their composure and equalized in the 79th minute with a goal from Abdulrahman Al Mushaifri. The match seemed to be headed for a draw, but the UAE had one final chance in injury time when they were awarded a penalty. However, Oman’s goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini made a crucial save, keeping the score level and ensuring that Oman earned the point they needed to progress.
Oman finished at the top of Group A, tied on five points with Kuwait, but advancing due to their better disciplinary record. Both teams only needed a draw in their final group-stage match to secure a semifinal spot, and while Kuwait and Oman played to a 1-1 draw earlier in the tournament, Oman edged ahead with their fair play record. Jaber emphasized the importance of focusing on the next challenge, the semifinal against Saudi Arabia, despite the struggles they faced in the group stage.
A potential setback for Oman comes in the form of an injury to key player Salah Al Yahyaei, who sustained a calf strain during the match against the UAE. Jaber noted that Al Yahyaei is an important part of the team and that his condition will be assessed ahead of the semifinal. Despite this, Oman remains determined to continue their strong performance, and with the confidence Jaber has shown in his squad, they will be looking to put up a strong fight against Saudi Arabia in the upcoming match.
