Oman Launches ‘Aman’ Campaign Against Human Trafficking

MUSCAT:As part of its national effort to combat human trafficking, Oman has launched the three-month ‘Aman’ awareness campaign under the supervision of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking. The campaign, initiated on World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30, aims to educate the public, workers, and employers about human trafficking, highlighting the serious legal consequences for those involved in or facilitating such offenses. Through various communication channels, including public awareness posters, the campaign seeks to foster a culture of vigilance and community cooperation in identifying and reporting trafficking violations.

The campaign emphasizes multiple forms of trafficking violations, such as withholding workers’ passports, harbouring offenders, forced labour, denial of basic rights, dealing with proceeds of trafficking crimes, and concealing evidence of such offenses. These practices undermine the rights and dignity of individuals and constitute severe violations under Omani law. By outlining these specific offenses, the authorities aim to make the public aware of the various ways human trafficking can occur and the responsibility of citizens to prevent such acts within their communities.

Legal repercussions under Omani law are clearly defined, with individuals found guilty of aiding or concealing human trafficking facing imprisonment from six months up to three years and fines ranging from RO 300 to RO 1,000. These penalties apply to anyone who knowingly harbors traffickers, conceals evidence, or possesses assets derived from trafficking crimes. The stringent penalties serve as a deterrent, reinforcing the seriousness of these offenses and the government’s commitment to upholding human rights and protecting vulnerable populations within the Sultanate.

The ‘Aman’ campaign also highlights the importance of public cooperation in eradicating human trafficking. Citizens are encouraged to report violations and assist in monitoring workplaces to ensure the protection of workers’ rights. Through continuous awareness, education, and collaboration between authorities and the community, Oman aims to create a safer environment, prevent trafficking-related crimes, and align with international standards for human rights protection. The campaign underscores the country’s proactive approach to social responsibility and the promotion of a secure and just society.
