Oman Geological Heritage Exhibition Opens In A’Rustaq

A’RUSTAQ: The fourth edition of the Oman Geological Heritage Exhibition, titled “Sustainability and Job Opportunities,” opened at Al Hazm Fort in A’Rustaq on Monday. This exhibition is scheduled to continue until the end of June 2025, offering visitors an in-depth exploration of Oman’s geological treasures. The event is organized by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in collaboration with the Office of the Governor of South Al Batinah, Petroleum Development Oman, and the Geological Society of Oman. Its goal is to promote Oman’s geological heritage and highlight the opportunities for sustainable development and job creation within the field of geotourism.

The exhibition is set across six distinct corners, each offering a unique perspective on Oman’s geological history. Visitors will be able to explore the fascinating story of geological formations in Oman, including the diverse types of geology found across the Sultanate. The exhibition also emphasizes the geological history of the land, offering a glimpse into how Oman’s landscape has evolved over millions of years. One of the key focuses of the exhibition is the importance of preserving this geological heritage and ensuring its sustainability for future generations.

At the heart of the exhibition is a display of Oman’s remarkable geological fossils. Among the most striking items is a fossil that dates back around 800 million years, providing insight into the ancient life forms that once inhabited the region. Other displays include three-dimensional models of extinct species, such as the primitive elephant whose fossilized teeth were discovered in Dhofar, and a model of an extinct dinosaur whose bones were found in Al Khoudh, A’Seeb. These exhibits highlight Oman’s rich fossil record and its significance in understanding Earth’s prehistoric past.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held under the auspices of Eng. Masoud Said Al Hashimi, the Governor of South Al Batinah. This marks a significant step in the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about Oman’s geological heritage. Through such exhibitions, the Sultanate aims to increase the visibility of its unique geological features, boost tourism, and foster job opportunities in geotourism, an emerging sector that connects the preservation of nature with sustainable employment.
