MUSCAT: The second phase of Oman’s national campaign to control invasive bird species has seen active participation from local communities, reinforcing the country’s commitment to environmental protection. The initiative, which resumed in early July, specifically targets species like the common myna and the Indian house crow, known for their disruptive impact on native ecosystems. Through coordinated fieldwork, teams have been monitoring key locations where these birds gather and implementing measures to limit their spread. This proactive approach ensures that ecological balance is maintained while reducing the negative consequences on Oman’s native wildlife.
Issa bin Abdullah Al Yahmadi, Chairman of the Sub-Committee for Combating Invasive Birds in South Al Batinah, highlighted that the campaign reflects a sustained effort to safeguard natural habitats across the Sultanate. The teams continue to track and manage the sites affected by these invasive species, using data-driven strategies to mitigate their impact. Authorities have emphasized that consistent monitoring and intervention are crucial to prevent the rapid proliferation of these birds, which can disrupt local food chains and displace indigenous species.
The invasive birds pose a tangible threat to Oman’s environment by competing with native species for food and nesting areas. Such competition can lead to the decline or extinction of vulnerable local species, further stressing fragile ecosystems. By targeting problem areas and implementing control measures, the campaign aims to preserve biodiversity while raising awareness among local communities about the importance of protecting the Sultanate’s ecological heritage. Public involvement has been critical, with residents collaborating with authorities to report sightings and support mitigation efforts.
This initiative forms part of a broader framework of cooperation between the Environment Authority, relevant governmental bodies, and local communities, aligning with Oman’s sustainable development goals. By combining technical expertise, community engagement, and ongoing monitoring, the campaign seeks to ensure long-term ecological stability. The program underscores the importance of proactive environmental management, highlighting Oman’s dedication to maintaining its rich natural resources and promoting sustainable coexistence between human activities and wildlife conservation.
