Oman Commemorates International Ozone Layer Preservation Day

MUSCAT: Oman marked the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer under this year’s theme, ‘From Science to Global Action,’ emphasizing the vital role of science in guiding effective measures to protect the ozone layer. The celebration highlighted the significance of the Montreal Protocol in shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation while supporting broader global climate action initiatives. Authorities underscored the importance of continued public awareness and policy adherence to ensure the long-term sustainability of the ozone layer and environmental protection.

Since becoming a party to the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol in 1998, Oman has implemented a series of regulations, programs, and policies to comply with international commitments. These efforts have successfully phased out critical ozone-depleting substances, with halons and CFCs reaching zero consumption by 2010 and methyl bromide usage discontinued by 2015. Oman’s proactive approach reflects its dedication to international environmental treaties and its commitment to fostering a sustainable ecological future in alignment with global standards.

In line with the Montreal Protocol, Oman has made substantial progress in phasing out hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), achieving reductions of 10% by 2015 and 35% by 2020, with plans to reach 67.5% by 2025. Strategic collaborations, including a recent agreement between the Environment Authority and the Oman Energy Association (OPAL), aim to develop professional competency standards in refrigeration and air conditioning, promoting environmentally friendly practices. These initiatives support Oman Vision 2040 goals, integrating climate sustainability into national development priorities.

Currently, Oman is implementing the third phase of the HCFC Phase-Out Strategy Project in partnership with UNEP and UNIDO, focusing on training, awareness, and regulatory updates. By actively participating in international environmental observances and implementing robust legislation, Oman continues to demonstrate leadership in ozone layer protection. The country’s efforts contribute to global environmental preservation, safeguarding human health and ecosystems while reinforcing its role as a responsible participant in international climate action initiatives.
