Muscat Governorate Launches VAT Awareness Campaign

MUSCAT: The Muscat Governorate has launched a comprehensive VAT awareness campaign aimed at empowering consumers and ensuring compliance with applicable tax laws. As part of the initiative, a detailed list of zero-rated goods has been prepared and distributed to commercial establishments, providing consumers with easy access to information about VAT exemptions. By scanning a QR code available at participating outlets, shoppers can quickly verify which goods are exempt from VAT, fostering transparency and promoting informed purchasing decisions.

The campaign has successfully reached approximately 900 commercial establishments across Muscat, reflecting a coordinated effort between the government and the private sector to strengthen consumer rights. Authorities emphasize the importance of public awareness in maintaining fair commercial practices and preventing the misapplication of VAT. Through widespread participation of retail outlets, the initiative ensures that the message reaches a broad spectrum of consumers, from daily shoppers to business clients.

Officials highlighted that this campaign aligns with broader efforts to modernize Oman’s tax system and enhance compliance through digital solutions. By integrating QR code technology, the initiative simplifies access to regulatory information and minimizes disputes between consumers and merchants regarding VAT application. The approach not only supports transparency but also contributes to efficient enforcement of the VAT law across the Governorate.

Authorities also stressed that the campaign will be continuously monitored, with regular updates to the zero-rated goods list and ongoing engagement with commercial establishments. Feedback from both businesses and consumers will be incorporated to improve the effectiveness of the program. Overall, the initiative represents a proactive step towards informed consumer participation, regulatory adherence, and the promotion of fair market practices in Muscat.
