Jabal Samhan Visitors Urged Caution Amid Harsh Conditions

JABAL: The Environment Authority (EA) has issued a public alert regarding visits to the Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve in Dhofar Governorate, specifically its popular summit compass trail. The warning follows reports of extreme weather conditions affecting the area and concerns over insufficient directional signage along the trail. Tourists and nature enthusiasts are being urged to exercise caution and consider postponing their plans until improvements are made and conditions stabilize.

Jabal Samhan, known for its panoramic views and ecological importance, attracts both local and international hikers throughout the year. However, recent monsoon-linked weather has brought heavy fog, strong winds, and sudden drops in visibility, making navigation on the already challenging summit trail even more hazardous. Authorities have stressed that, while the natural beauty of the area is undeniable, safety must be prioritized during such unstable conditions.

In addition to weather risks, the EA emphasized that parts of the compass trail remain inadequately marked, increasing the likelihood of hikers losing their way. Until updated signs and proper trail reinforcements are completed, the Authority is advising only highly experienced trekkers with appropriate gear and knowledge of the terrain to attempt the hike. They also recommend traveling in groups and notifying local officials of any planned routes beforehand.

The alert forms part of the Authority’s wider mission to protect visitors and preserve the integrity of Oman’s diverse natural reserves. It serves as a reminder that while adventure tourism continues to grow in the Sultanate, environmental responsibility and personal safety must go hand-in-hand. The EA is continuing efforts to improve infrastructure and promote awareness to ensure that reserves like Jabal Samhan remain both accessible and secure for future generations.
