Iraqi Police Arrest 77-Year-Old Woman and Her Son Involved in Thefts

BAGHDAD: Iraqi police have made an arrest after capturing a 77-year-old woman and her son, believed to be involved in a series of thefts across the city of Najaf. The pair is accused of committing at least ten thefts targeting homes, shops, and jewellery stores in the region. Authorities stated that the elderly woman was responsible for handling the resale of the stolen goods, while her son was reportedly the one carrying out the actual thefts. The pair’s activities have shocked the public due to their age and the unusual family involvement in such crimes.

Among the incidents that have come to light, one of the most alarming was the theft of a gold necklace from a young girl in a local market. The brazen nature of this crime has sparked significant public interest, as it is rare for an elderly individual to be involved in such acts. In addition to the necklace, other stolen items included gold, cash, and even motorcycles. The thefts have raised serious concerns about the level of security in Najaf and the ease with which the criminals were able to operate.

Following the arrests, authorities recovered several items that had not yet been sold, and investigations are ongoing. The stolen goods were primarily resold in local markets, allowing the pair to make significant profits from their illicit activities. The police have transferred the suspects to the judiciary for further investigation and legal proceedings. The involvement of an elderly woman has raised eyebrows, with many questioning how she managed to engage in such criminal activities without detection for an extended period.

The arrest has garnered widespread attention due to the unusual nature of the crime, especially the involvement of a family in these thefts. The woman’s age, combined with the surprising role of her son in the crimes, has sparked discussions in the local media. Authorities are now focusing on uncovering the full extent of the duo’s criminal activities, as they continue to piece together the details of the thefts and determine if others were involved in the operations.
