MUSCAT: Hussain Taha’s participation in the 2024 World Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest marked a significant milestone for Oman’s swimming community. As one of the first swimmers trained at a private club in Oman, Nautilus Swimming Club, Hussain competed on the global stage, showing the potential of private clubs in fostering world-class athletes. His success not only highlights his talent but also promotes the growth of private clubs in Oman as critical players in the development of competitive swimmers.
The competition, held at the renowned Duna Arena, brought together some of the world’s best swimmers, and Hussain stood out despite being the youngest in his events. He competed in the 400m individual medley (IM) and the 100m breaststroke. At just 16 years old, Hussain’s performance in the 400m IM was particularly remarkable. He clocked a time of 4:36.34, securing 38th place overall, an outstanding result given the experience of the other competitors.
In the 100m breaststroke, Hussain achieved another remarkable feat by setting a new national record for Oman with a time of 1:03.97. His performance in this event solidified his reputation as the fastest breaststroker in Oman. The 50-meter split of 29.93 seconds further emphasized his excellent technique and speed. His total of 645 FINA points for both events reflects not just his skill, but the high-quality coaching and preparation he received at Nautilus Swimming Club under Olympic coach Ivan Proskura.
Founded in 2015, Nautilus Swimming Club has become a beacon of competitive swimming in Oman, helping develop swimmers who excel in both national and international competitions. The club’s rigorous training programs and dedicated coaching staff have produced athletes like Hussain, who have shattered national records and represented Oman on the world stage. Nautilus continues to produce swimmers who achieve success at regional competitions, showcasing the club’s far-reaching impact on Oman’s swimming development.
