Gulf Region’s Economic Development Focuses on Climate Change

MUSCAT: The Oman Economic Association, in collaboration with the Gulf Development Forum, is hosting a two-day meeting to address pressing issues related to climate change and the economic development of the Gulf region. The event, held in Muscat, is drawing a significant number of high-level officials from the GCC countries, representing various sectors such as energy, economy, and environment.

The main agenda of the meeting centers around the policies and technologies required for the Gulf states to tackle the challenges arising from energy transformation and climate change. A vital part of the discussion is the implementation of climate-related international agreements, including the Conferences of the Parties (COP), as well as the economic and political roles of clean energy sources, like renewables, nuclear energy, and hydrogen.

The first day of the meeting witnessed the presentation of several working papers across three sessions. These sessions explored critical topics, such as the essential policies and technologies for mitigating climate change, the future of climate change management, and how behavioural sciences can play a role in addressing climate challenges within the GCC. The sessions also emphasized the Gulf countries’ commitments toward climate adaptation and their involvement in shaping the global climate framework.

The discussions highlight the Gulf states’ ongoing efforts to ensure that economic development is aligned with sustainable practices. The meeting is expected to provide valuable insights into the steps required to meet the region’s climate goals while fostering economic growth. The collaboration between the Gulf countries and international climate bodies continues to strengthen, aiming for a balanced approach to energy and environmental challenges.
