Gulf Economic Forum Tackles Climate Change and Development

MUSCAT: The Oman Economic Association, in collaboration with the Gulf Development Forum, has organized a two-day meeting in Muscat to address critical issues related to climate change and the economic development of the Gulf region. The meeting brings together top officials from various sectors including energy, economy, and environment from the GCC countries, highlighting the importance of collective efforts to confront the environmental and economic challenges faced by the region.

One of the key areas of focus during the event is the policies and technologies required to help the Gulf states navigate the energy transformation and address the pressing issue of climate change. The discussions will also explore the commitments of Gulf countries regarding international climate agreements, particularly the Conferences of the Parties (COP), and assess the political and economic roles of clean energy sources such as renewables, nuclear energy, and hydrogen.

The first day of the meeting saw the presentation of several working papers across three different sessions. These papers tackled various important topics such as the necessary policies and technologies for climate change mitigation and the future of climate change management in the Gulf region. Additionally, the role of behavioral sciences in managing climate change, as well as its integration into policy frameworks, was discussed extensively.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the commitments made by Gulf countries in terms of climate adaptation and their participation in the evolving global climate framework. By analyzing these commitments and how the region plans to meet its climate goals, the forum aims to foster a cooperative approach among Gulf states in mitigating the effects of climate change while promoting economic growth and sustainability.
