Fishing Licenses Suspended Across Key Sectors In Oman

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has announced the suspension of fishing licenses for several sectors, marking a significant move to ensure sustainable fishing practices and adherence to regulations. The decision impacts individuals, companies, and institutions in the fisheries sector, following the end of the licensing application period on December 24, 2024.

Among the licenses suspended are those for commercial fishing vessels using enclosure and trawling systems for small pelagic fish and tuna, as well as commercial vessels employing nets for squid. Coastal fishing vessels operating with fence and line systems are also affected. These measures aim to preserve aquatic life and regulate the exploitation of marine resources, ensuring long-term ecological and economic benefits.

The Ministry has emphasized that purchasing or constructing fishing vessels without prior approval constitutes a violation of Article 58 of the Aquatic Life Wealth Law and its executive regulations. Violators of these provisions will face legal consequences, including fines or other penalties, as the Ministry seeks to uphold strict compliance across the sector.

Authorities have also warned that any unauthorized activity will not only breach regulations but could result in financial losses for the violators. The Ministry has stated unequivocally that it will not assume responsibility for any financial repercussions stemming from illegal activities. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a responsible and sustainable fisheries sector.
