DUBAI: Dubai has approved a landmark 100-year deep-tunnel drainage project designed to boost the city’s climate resilience following the record-breaking rainfall of April 2024. Announced at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum 2025, the mega infrastructure plan underscores Dubai’s long-term commitment to safeguarding residents and assets from future flooding events.
Authorities explained that the project will employ a public–private partnership (PPP) model to attract international expertise and investment. This approach is expected to accelerate construction timelines and ensure high-quality delivery standards for one of the largest drainage systems in the region.
Advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data integration technologies will be at the core of the initiative, allowing engineers and urban planners to map underground networks precisely and predict water flow patterns during extreme weather. This will help create a more efficient, future-ready drainage infrastructure.
Urban planners and sustainability experts view the project as a pivotal step in transforming Dubai’s resilience strategy. By combining innovative engineering with advanced data tools, the city aims to minimize disruptions from climate-related events and set a global benchmark for large-scale flood management systems.
