Dhofar And Sohar Airports Experience Significant Passenger Traffic Growth

SALALAH: Salalah Airport witnessed a substantial increase in passenger traffic during the three-month Dhofar Khareef Season, driven by growing demand for travel to the governorate’s scenic landscapes, mild climate, and rich cultural events. Passenger numbers rose to 562,561, representing a 13.2 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. Aircraft movements also grew by 10 percent, reaching 3,409 flights, up from 3,105 the previous year. Oman Airports attributed this growth to coordinated strategies aimed at solidifying Salalah Airport’s role as a primary gateway to Dhofar and enhancing the overall travel experience for visitors.

Similarly, Sohar Airport reported remarkable growth, with passenger numbers rising 80 percent between July and August 2025. The airport recorded 6,495 passengers in July and 11,691 in August, reflecting the increasing regional interest in domestic travel. This surge underscores the importance of secondary airports in supporting regional connectivity and accommodating rising tourism and business travel demand. Airport authorities are actively investing in operational improvements and passenger services to sustain this growth and ensure a seamless travel experience.

To enhance convenience, Salalah Airport introduced several new services this season. These included a drive-through check-in option available from July 15 to September 15, enabling travelers to complete their check-in procedures without leaving their vehicles. Additionally, the ‘Maraheb’ service by Transom provided early check-in, baggage drop-off, and home registration options, while self-service kiosks offered faster and more flexible check-in alternatives. These initiatives reflect Oman Airports’ commitment to delivering a modern, efficient, and passenger-centric travel environment.

On the international front, Salalah Airport expanded its connectivity with the launch of new seasonal routes. Saudi Airlines operated its first flights to Salalah, Fly Baghdad conducted two charter flights from Basra, and Iraqi Airways introduced two charter flights from Baghdad. The airport also hosted a FIFA e-tournament at the cargo terminal, attracting youth and e-sports enthusiasts. Oman Airports, in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority and other stakeholders, confirmed the operational readiness of both Muscat and Salalah airports to handle increased seasonal traffic efficiently, reinforcing Oman’s status as a leading regional hub for tourism, culture, and global connectivity.
