MUSCAT: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has initiated the first phase of its nationwide QR code project by distributing digital codes to commercial outlets across Muscat. These QR codes will enable consumers to verify product information, check prices, and report any grievances directly to the CPA through a simple scan. The rollout in Muscat serves as a pilot, allowing the authority to test the system’s functionality and gather feedback before expanding to other governorates.
Participating retailers have been provided with guidelines on where to display the QR codes—typically near cash registers and on product shelves—to ensure maximum visibility and ease of use. The CPA conducted training workshops for store managers and staff, demonstrating how to assist customers with scanning and navigating the mobile interface. Retailers are also encouraged to promote awareness of the new service through in-store signage and social media channels.
The QR code system is designed to bolster transparency in the marketplace, reduce incidents of price manipulation, and empower consumers with real-time access to accurate information. Once scanned, users can view details such as the official retail price, product ingredients, warranty terms, and authorized distributor contacts. Should any discrepancies or complaints arise, consumers can file reports instantly, triggering a follow-up investigation by the CPA’s enforcement teams.
Following the Muscat pilot, the CPA plans to refine the technology based on stakeholder feedback and roll out QR code distribution to all commercial centers in Oman. This initiative aligns with the authority’s broader strategy to modernize consumer protection mechanisms, leverage digital tools for faster issue resolution, and build trust between businesses and shoppers across the Sultanate.
