MUSCAT: The Muscat Governorate Police Command has apprehended an Omani citizen accused of orchestrating a rental scam that targeted several unsuspecting victims. According to the Royal Oman Police, the individual had advertised fake rental properties on digital platforms, collecting advance payments from interested tenants before disappearing without fulfilling any rental agreement. This fraudulent activity caused financial loss to multiple victims across different areas of the governorate.
The authorities launched an investigation following a series of complaints from victims who reported being misled by online advertisements for non-existent or unavailable rental units. The suspect used false identities and manipulated images to make the listings appear legitimate. Victims were asked to transfer booking amounts digitally, after which all communication would cease. This tactic allowed the accused to evade detection for some time.
Investigators were able to trace the suspect through electronic transactions and communication records, ultimately leading to the arrest. The Royal Oman Police have confirmed that the individual is currently in custody and legal proceedings are underway. They have also retrieved evidence linking him to multiple cases of fraud within the governorate.
The ROP continues to advise the public to verify the authenticity of rental listings, avoid sending payments without legal documentation, and report suspicious activities promptly. They also urge citizens and residents to rely on verified real estate agents and official channels for property dealings to prevent falling victim to similar scams.
