CHINA: A high-level Chinese delegation, led by Dong Baotong, Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, visited the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) in Abu Dhabi. This visit is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in nuclear safety and environmental matters. The delegation was welcomed by senior officials at FANR, where discussions centered around enhancing collaboration on nuclear safety, research, capacity building, non-proliferation, and advanced nuclear technologies. Both nations expressed their commitment to working together to develop a safer, more sustainable nuclear energy future.
The Chinese delegation’s visit follows the signing of a three-year action plan between the UAE and China in November 2024. This plan aims to foster greater cooperation in various areas of nuclear energy, with a specific focus on improving safety standards and technological innovation. The memorandum of understanding, originally signed in 2018, laid the groundwork for future nuclear collaborations, emphasizing shared goals in the peaceful use of nuclear technology and non-proliferation efforts.
During their time in the UAE, the Chinese delegation also toured the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which is the UAE’s first nuclear energy facility. This state-of-the-art plant is integral to the UAE’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The delegation had the opportunity to observe the high safety standards in place at Barakah, including the advanced systems designed to ensure the plant’s operations are safe, efficient, and secure.
Additionally, the delegation visited FANR’s Emergency Operations Centre, where they learned about the UAE’s emergency response capabilities and protocols. This facility is crucial in managing nuclear incidents, ensuring that swift and effective action can be taken in the event of an emergency. The visit provided valuable insights into the UAE’s preparedness to handle potential nuclear emergencies and highlighted the country’s commitment to maintaining world-class nuclear safety standards.
