CAA Enhances Drone Regulations to Boost Safe Accessibility

MUSCAT: In a significant step toward modernizing drone usage across Oman, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has implemented new regulatory measures following a comprehensive community engagement initiative. Operating under the slogan “Your opinion heard,” the initiative focused on making drone operations safer, more accessible, and user-oriented. New pricing models have been introduced, including a student-specific package that has already served over 100 applicants. A limited-time promotional registration fee of RO 1 and a 10% discount on the popular Nawras package are also part of the efforts to encourage responsible drone adoption.

One of the most notable outcomes is the launch of expanded ‘green zones’—designated areas approved for recreational and professional drone flying. These zones were selected based on over 800 proposals submitted by drone enthusiasts nationwide. A specialized review committee was formed to assess the feasibility of the proposed sites. To further streamline the process, the CAA has unveiled an online portal for ongoing green zone submissions. Several sites have already received preliminary approval, marking a proactive shift in airspace planning.

In addition to infrastructure enhancements, the CAA has enacted policy-level changes to facilitate more flexible drone operations. Notably, the authority now allows for the controlled movement of drones between airports within Oman, provided users comply with established procedures. This is aimed at supporting professional drone operators and commercial services requiring cross-regional functionality, aligning with international best practices in drone logistics and aviation safety.

Further collaboration with the Directorate General of Customs has led to updated import regulations. Citizens from 14 approved countries may now bring drones into Oman, subject to defined protocols and oversight. These developments reflect a broader vision of integrating drone technology into Oman’s economic and recreational landscape while maintaining robust safety and compliance standards. The comprehensive overhaul positions Oman as a regional leader in regulated drone innovation.
