MUSCAT: Oman has reported a 2.5 percent decrease in the number of expatriate workers from Bangladesh, according to the latest data released by national authorities. This decline is part of a broader downward trend in the South Asian workforce, which has traditionally formed a significant portion of Oman’s labor market. The shift signals evolving dynamics within the country’s employment landscape, influenced by policy adjustments, economic diversification, and labor market reforms aligned with Oman Vision 2040.
The reduction in Bangladeshi expatriates may be attributed to a combination of stricter recruitment regulations, changes in demand across key sectors such as construction and services, and an increased push to prioritize local employment. Oman’s focus on Omanisation has led to growing opportunities for nationals, particularly in mid- and low-skilled job categories that were once dominated by foreign workers. As a result, fewer permits are being issued to workers from South Asian nations.
Additionally, recruitment agencies in both Oman and Bangladesh have faced increased scrutiny, with authorities clamping down on irregular migration channels and labor rights violations. Bilateral labor agreements and improved monitoring systems are contributing to a more regulated and transparent recruitment process. These measures are designed to enhance the protection of migrant workers while aligning with Oman’s broader efforts to modernize its labor policies.
