Al Dhahirah Model Farms Boost Agriculture And Farmer Incomes

MUSCAT: The model farms programme in Al Dhahirah Governorate is contributing significantly to agricultural advancement by supporting more than 250 farms with over 15,000 high-quality date palm offshoots and fruit seedlings. Introduced in 2020, the programme focuses on raising farmers’ incomes through the introduction of advanced irrigation technologies and high-yield seed varieties. The initiative aligns with national objectives to improve food security and promote sustainable agricultural development, making the farms more productive and efficient.

Implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the programme has led to the cultivation of date palms and various fruit trees over a total area of 140 fedans across different wilayats in the governorate. These farms now feature crops like mango, Adalia lemon, Omani lemon, guava, figs, and grapes. Each selection was chosen for its high market value and compatibility with Oman’s climate, contributing to higher returns and better resource utilization for local farmers.

One of the key aspects of the programme is the installation of modern irrigation systems, which help optimize water usage and boost productivity. The Ministry ensures that distributed seedlings and offshoots are provided under specific conditions to maintain quality and monitor results. These measures are intended to support not only short-term growth but also the long-term viability of the sector, by encouraging environmentally responsible and resource-efficient practices.

Data from the Directorate General of Agriculture and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah shows that about 9,000 date palm offshoots and 6,000 fruit seedlings have already been distributed. The programme aims to create a qualitative shift in Oman’s agriculture sector by improving the quality and quantity of production. Through such efforts, the model farms programme is setting a strong foundation for continued agricultural prosperity in the governorate and beyond.
