MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Oman, under the direction of His Excellency Dr. Saud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed Al Habsi, announced the lifting of the animal import ban on specific regions in India, Nepal, Turkey, Australia, and Puerto Rico. The decision follows thorough verification and confirmation from relevant veterinary authorities, ensuring that all animal health standards have been fully met. The move reflects Oman’s adherence to international guidelines and its commitment to safe and regulated trade in livestock and animal products.
The decision specifically applies to the Indian states of Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka; the Republic of Nepal; Konya and Kayseri provinces in Turkey; Victoria state in Australia; and Puerto Rico. Authorities emphasized that the ban was initially imposed to safeguard domestic animal health and prevent the spread of diseases. With the resolution now published in the Official Gazette, the lifted restrictions will take effect the following day, allowing regulated imports to resume without compromising national biosecurity measures.
The Ministry’s action was based on recommendations by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), which assessed the regions’ veterinary compliance and confirmed that previously identified risks had been effectively addressed. Omani officials highlighted the importance of maintaining strong international cooperation in animal health and veterinary practices, noting that adherence to WOAH guidelines ensures continued protection of both domestic livestock and public health. This decision demonstrates Oman’s proactive approach to balancing trade facilitation with robust animal health oversight.
Officials also encouraged traders, livestock exporters, and relevant stakeholders to stay informed about updates and comply with all import regulations. The Ministry confirmed that monitoring and inspection mechanisms remain in place to prevent the introduction of animal diseases, ensuring long-term sustainability in Oman’s livestock sector. This move is expected to enhance trade relations with the affected regions while reinforcing Oman’s reputation as a country that upholds high standards of veterinary safety and animal welfare.
