MUSCAT: As part of intensified market monitoring targeting commercial establishments, Omani authorities conducted a comprehensive operation that led to the seizure of prohibited non-smoked chewing tobacco stored in a local store’s warehouse. The confiscated items included various popular brands such as ‘Afdhal,’ ‘Pan Bahar,’ ‘Shaker,’ and ‘Raja Kallis,’ amounting to a total of 1,018 bags and boxes. This enforcement action highlights the ongoing efforts of regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with national laws, particularly those designed to protect consumer health and maintain market integrity.
The operation revealed a significant breach of the Consumer Protection Law, specifically under Decision No. 256/2015, amended by Decision No. 206/2023, which strictly prohibits the trade of non-smoked chewing tobacco in any form or under any brand name. Authorities emphasized that the seized products were being prepared for destruction in accordance with legal procedures. This measure underscores the seriousness of violations related to tobacco products and reflects the government’s commitment to public health and safety.
In addition to addressing the immediate violation, the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) continues to carry out proactive inspection and monitoring campaigns across commercial markets. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to provide safe, regulated environments for consumers while preventing unlawful trading activities. By maintaining strict oversight, the CPA aims to foster consumer confidence and ensure that markets operate in accordance with the law, ultimately contributing to a healthier and safer society.
Authorities also call upon consumers to participate in safeguarding public health by reporting any suspected violations through the CPA’s communication channels. Active public cooperation is considered crucial in detecting non-compliant practices and preventing potential harm. These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes sustainable development, improved quality of life, and the creation of a safe and healthy environment for all citizens and residents.
