MUSCAT: The GCC Statistical Committee convened in Muscat under the organization of the GCC Statistical Center (GCC-Stat) to discuss the draft of a joint strategic plan for statistical action covering 2026–2030. The plan aims to enhance the regional statistical framework by integrating data across member states, thereby strengthening evidence-based decision-making processes that support sustainable development policies. Participants emphasized that the plan represents a key step in advancing the role of statistics in guiding regional strategies.
Central to the discussions was the recognition that the proposed plan would serve as a roadmap for the future of GCC statistical cooperation. Delegates underscored the importance of aligning statistical practices across the region to ensure comparability, accuracy, and reliability of data. By creating a unified framework, the GCC seeks to optimize resources and avoid duplication while enhancing the capacity of national statistical institutions to meet global standards.
The committee also examined a proposal to prepare the first GCC voluntary report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative would allow member states to collectively monitor and report on their progress toward achieving the 2030 Agenda. By consolidating regional data, the GCC aims to highlight both successes and challenges, providing a more comprehensive picture of development in the region and contributing to international reporting frameworks.
Additionally, the participants addressed the importance of establishing a GCC Environmental Performance Index. This index would incorporate indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of national statistical systems in measuring environmental sustainability. The initiative reflects the region’s growing awareness of environmental challenges and the need for reliable data to inform policy. By advancing such initiatives, the GCC reinforces its commitment to data-driven governance and sustainable growth.
