MUSCAT: Oman Customs has successfully carried out a major raid in the Wilayat of Liwa, North Al Batinah Governorate, resulting in the seizure of over 5,831 cartons of prohibited cigarettes and more than 3,460 kilograms of tobacco derivatives. This operation was executed following extensive monitoring and risk assessment measures conducted by the Compliance and Risk Assessment Department, which identified a residential property being used as an illegal storage facility for these prohibited items. The seized goods represent a significant volume of contraband that would have otherwise entered the local market illegally, posing financial and health risks.
The operation highlights Oman Customs’ continued efforts to combat the smuggling and illegal distribution of tobacco products across the Sultanate. Authorities stated that such raids are part of a broader strategy to ensure compliance with customs regulations and protect the economy from the adverse impacts of illicit trade. The confiscated products not only violate local laws but also undermine national health policies aimed at reducing the consumption of harmful substances. Officials emphasized that contraband tobacco has become a major concern, often linked to organized networks seeking to evade taxes and customs duties.
In addition to protecting public health, these measures also safeguard legitimate businesses operating within the regulated market. The economic implications of illegal tobacco trade are significant, as it deprives the government of substantial tax revenues that can be used for national development projects. Furthermore, smuggling operations often fund other unlawful activities, creating a broader security concern. By dismantling these supply chains, Oman Customs aims to send a strong deterrent message to those involved in illicit activities and maintain the integrity of the national economy.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify individuals and networks associated with this illegal operation. Legal action will be taken against those responsible, in line with the applicable laws and penalties for smuggling and possession of banned substances. Oman Customs reiterated its call for public cooperation by reporting suspicious activities related to illegal trade, underscoring that community awareness and vigilance are critical in addressing this issue. This successful operation stands as a testament to the proactive approach of Oman’s enforcement agencies in tackling illicit trade and ensuring compliance with national regulations.
