MUSCAT: A case involving a home construction delay has been successfully resolved by the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) in Muscat, highlighting the importance of contractual compliance and consumer rights. The issue arose after a consumer entered into a contract with an establishment engaged in contracting and building materials for the construction of his house, which included a clearly defined completion date. However, the project faced considerable delays, prompting the consumer to file an official complaint with the CPA to seek redress for the inconvenience and breach of agreement.
Following the submission of the complaint, specialized teams from the CPA launched an investigation into the matter and established communication with both parties. Through multiple meetings and detailed negotiations, the Authority worked diligently to mediate the dispute and ensure a fair settlement. The primary objective was to uphold the rights of the consumer while ensuring that the service provider met its obligations in accordance with the contract and consumer protection regulations.
As part of the settlement terms agreed upon by both parties, the establishment committed to refunding the amount of RO 1,031 for incomplete work, with the payment structured into two instalments. Additionally, the agreement required the establishment to supply essential construction materials, specifically sand and cement, and to complete certain pending works such as external wiring on the property. These measures were designed to ensure the consumer’s interests were safeguarded while allowing the contractor to fulfill part of its original commitment.
The CPA emphasized the critical importance of service providers honoring their contractual obligations and delivering services as promised to maintain trust and fairness in commercial transactions. This case serves as a reminder of the Authority’s active role in resolving disputes, promoting accountability, and ensuring that consumers receive the protection they are entitled to under the law. Such actions reinforce confidence in the market and demonstrate the commitment to transparency and justice in Oman’s business environment.
