Court Imposes Jail Term And Fines On Sohar Establishment

MUSCAT: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) confirmed that a Sohar-based establishment faced strict legal consequences after multiple complaints were filed regarding non-compliance with service agreements. The business, which specialized in the manufacture and installation of doors, windows, and glass partitions, failed to deliver services within the contractual timelines. Following an investigation by the Directorate General for Consumer Protection in North Al Batinah, the matter was escalated to the Public Prosecution and subsequently referred to the competent court for adjudication.

The court’s ruling was based on violations of Article 23 of the Consumer Protection Law, which mandates that suppliers provide services in accordance with agreed standards and guarantee their quality for a suitable period. Any failure in service delivery obligates the supplier to either refund the amount, offer compensation, or re-perform the service correctly. The CPA emphasized that this provision ensures accountability and protects consumer rights, making non-compliance a serious legal offense.

In its verdict, the court sentenced the defendant to terms of imprisonment and imposed financial penalties. These punishments serve as a deterrent to businesses that fail to honor service agreements or attempt to bypass consumer rights. The ruling demonstrates the judiciary’s commitment to enforcing legal provisions and ensuring that commercial entities operate transparently and responsibly within the framework of Omani law.

The CPA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumer interests and maintaining fair market practices by closely monitoring businesses across the Sultanate. It urged suppliers and service providers to adhere to principles of honesty, credibility, and integrity in all dealings. The authority also warned that any breach of obligations under the Consumer Protection Law would result in strict legal action, underscoring the importance of compliance to maintain trust and protect market stability.
