Air Conditioning Theft Suspects Arrested In Sohar Wilayat

SOHAR: Police in Oman’s North Al Batinah Governorate have arrested two Omani nationals and one individual of Arab nationality following an investigation into the theft of multiple air conditioning units from a women’s sports hall located in Sohar Wilayat. The operation was launched after hall management reported the disappearance of the units, prompting officers to examine surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and conduct field investigations in the surrounding area. The suspects were identified within a short period, leading to coordinated efforts to track their movements and verify stolen property locations. Authorities said the swift arrests highlight their capability to respond quickly to crimes affecting public facilities and community welfare.

Initial inquiries suggest that the theft was a premeditated act carried out with the intent to sell the stolen air conditioning units on the black market or dismantle them for component parts. Investigators believe the group monitored the sports hall’s security routines and identified vulnerable access points, taking advantage of off-hours to remove the equipment without immediate detection. Police recovered several of the stolen units from different storage locations linked to the suspects, confirming their involvement in the incident. Officials emphasised that this type of crime causes financial losses and service disruptions, potentially affecting local initiatives aimed at promoting women’s health and fitness.

Following the arrests, the suspects were transferred to relevant legal authorities for further questioning and subsequent referral to the Public Prosecution. Police continue to investigate whether the individuals were involved in similar thefts in other Wilayats or acted as part of a wider criminal enterprise targeting public facilities. The case has sparked renewed calls for enhanced security measures in sports halls and community centres, particularly those offering specialised services for women. Authorities urged facility administrators to invest in surveillance upgrades, secure storage solutions, and improved perimeter security to deter future thefts.

The Royal Oman Police reiterated its commitment to protecting public assets and maintaining safety across all governorates, encouraging community members to report suspicious activity promptly. They reminded the public that cooperation between residents and law enforcement plays a vital role in preventing property crimes and ensuring swift justice for offenders. Community outreach programmes aimed at raising awareness about criminal tactics and prevention strategies are expected to be intensified in the wake of this case. Officials assured that they will continue to pursue any accomplices and maintain vigilant oversight in areas deemed susceptible to theft and similar unlawful behaviour.
