Oman Urges Reforms For Inclusive UN Security Council

MUSCAT: Oman has called for revitalizing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), urging reforms that would enhance its inclusivity, responsiveness, and ability to reflect contemporary global realities. The statement was made during a recent international forum where Omani representatives emphasized the need for structural changes to the Council’s composition and functioning to ensure it adequately represents the interests of all nations, particularly those from underrepresented regions such as the Global South.

The Omani delegation underscored that the current structure of the Security Council, with its five permanent members wielding veto power, often hinders effective responses to global crises. They stressed the importance of giving more voice and influence to emerging nations and regional blocs, thereby allowing the Council to operate with greater legitimacy and equity. This, they argued, would enable the UNSC to respond more effectively to modern security threats, humanitarian issues, and geopolitical shifts.

In their address, Oman reiterated its commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter. The delegation highlighted the urgent need for cooperation among member states to advance peace, stability, and sustainable development. They also noted that the world’s geopolitical landscape has evolved significantly since the Council’s formation in 1945, and reforms are necessary to match the changing dynamics of international relations and ensure the UNSC’s continued relevance.

Finally, Oman called on all member states to engage constructively in negotiations over Council reform, urging flexibility and political will from the permanent members to create a fairer, more accountable institution. Oman’s position reflects a growing consensus among UN member states that meaningful reform of the Security Council is vital to restoring trust in the international system and ensuring a more balanced approach to global governance.
