MUSCAT: The Governorate of Dhofar has launched a series of ambitious tourism projects aimed at expanding its hospitality and leisure infrastructure. These initiatives include the development of beachfront resorts along Al Mughsail Bay, refurbishment of heritage guesthouses in Salalah Old Town, and construction of eco-friendly lodges near the Tawi Atayr sinkhole. The planned upgrades are designed to cater to both luxury travellers seeking high-end amenities and adventure tourists drawn to the region’s natural landscapes and unique biodiversity.
In parallel with infrastructure expansion, several experiential attractions are in the works. A frankincense heritage trail will guide visitors through ancient harvesting sites, complete with interpretive signage and interactive exhibits. Adventure operators will gain access to new zipline courses in the Jabal Samhan nature reserve, while a desert safari camp will offer overnight glamping experiences in the Rub’ al Khali fringe. These offerings are meant to deepen visitor engagement with Dhofar’s cultural and environmental heritage.
To amplify awareness, the tourism authority has intensified promotional efforts across digital and traditional channels. A multimedia campaign titled “Discover Khareef Magic” is being rolled out on social media platforms, featuring drone footage of the monsoon-cooled landscapes. Partnerships with international travel influencers and participation in global tourism fairs in Dubai, Frankfurt, and Singapore are also planned. Strategic roadshows in key source markets—such as India, China, and the GCC—will showcase Dhofar’s diversified itinerary options to travel trade partners.
Officials anticipate that the combined push in development and marketing will boost visitor numbers by at least 20 percent over the next two years. Enhanced connectivity through improved road networks and upcoming charter flight agreements is expected to shorten travel times and open new entry points. By positioning Dhofar as both a cultural heritage hub and an eco-adventure destination, the governorate aims to strengthen its tourism economy, create job opportunities for local communities, and contribute to Oman Vision 2040’s goals for sustainable growth.
