Three Omanis Killed in Traffic Accidents Involving Stray Camels

MUSCAT: The recent tragic deaths of three Omanis in two separate traffic accidents have sparked widespread concern in the country. These incidents, which occurred over the past two days, involved stray camels on the roads and resulted in the immediate deaths of the victims. The first accident took place on Monday in the Duqm province of Al Wusta Governorate, when two Omanis were travelling in their car and collided with a stray camel. The two men, from Rustaq, were heading to work when the fatal crash occurred.

In the second incident, another Omani lost his life after his vehicle collided with a stray camel in the wilayat of Ibra, located in the Sharqiyah Governorate. The man, who died on the spot, was involved in a similar crash, emphasizing the growing danger posed by wandering camels on Oman’s roads. The nature of these accidents, particularly in areas with poor visibility or inadequate lighting, has raised concerns about road safety.

The increase in accidents involving stray animals has caused a stir on social media, where many citizens are calling for stricter penalties for camel owners who allow their animals to roam freely on roads. The presence of these animals, which are often unaccompanied and unpredictable, represents a serious hazard to drivers. Social media users have urged authorities to take action and enforce fines or other measures against negligent owners who endanger public safety.

To address the issue, the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources has implemented a decision to seize stray animals, including camels, horses, and other livestock. Owners who fail to control their animals could face fines, with daily boarding charges also applied. This decision aims to prevent such accidents by ensuring that stray animals are kept away from roads, and it includes a requirement for municipalities to establish shelters to care for seized animals.
