Messi Fined For Altercation During MLS Opener Against NYCFC

NEW YORK: Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi has been fined an undisclosed amount after a controversial incident in the team’s MLS opener against New York City FC. The altercation occurred after the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Video footage from the game showed Messi grabbing the back of an NYCFC coach’s neck. The coach pulled away, and the incident prompted the MLS Disciplinary Committee to impose a fine, though the exact amount has not been disclosed.

This event comes amid a series of fines for player conduct during the match. Messi’s teammate, Luis Suarez, also faced financial penalties for violating the league’s policy concerning interactions with an opponent’s face, head, or neck. Suarez was caught on camera pinching the neck of Norwegian defender Birk Risa during halftime. The league’s decision to fine both players has drawn attention, reflecting the high standards the MLS maintains for player behavior.

Despite the disciplinary issues, Inter Miami has been able to maintain their competitive form. Just days after the fine was announced, the team secured a spot in the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup second round. They triumphed 3-1 over Sporting Kansas City, with Messi scoring in the 19th minute, followed by goals from Tadeo Allende and Suarez before halftime. The win, coupled with a 4-1 aggregate scoreline, ensured Miami’s progression to the next round.

Looking ahead, Inter Miami’s focus shifts to the 2024 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup champions, Cavalier FC. The first leg of the match will take place on March 6 at Chase Stadium, with the second leg scheduled for March 13 in Kingston, Jamaica. The team will need to build on their momentum to advance further in international competition, hoping to overcome Cavalier FC and secure a spot in the prestigious tournament’s later rounds.
