ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi is preparing for a significant surge in grocery discounts this Ramadan, with the UAE Ministry of Economy collaborating with local retailers to offer up to 65% off on over 10,000 essential grocery items. This initiative is aimed at making staple goods more affordable for consumers during the holy month, potentially saving shoppers around Dh35 million. The discounts apply to various food categories, with an emphasis on products typically in high demand during Ramadan, such as rice, oil, sugar, and other essential pantry items. The effort is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that families in Abu Dhabi can maintain access to affordable groceries while observing the fasting period.
Alongside the grocery discounts, the government has worked to secure a steady supply of fresh produce for the public. Every day, 15,000 tons of fruits and vegetables arrive at the central market in Dubai, and 6,000 tons are imported directly into Abu Dhabi. This regular supply is expected to meet the increased demand during Ramadan, where fresh fruits and vegetables are key components of the meals prepared for Iftar and Suhoor. Authorities have assured that the distribution network will be robust, and there should be no shortages of essential produce during the month.
Furthermore, in an effort to curb price manipulation, the UAE government has imposed strict regulations on certain essential goods, preventing any price hikes on nine key items, including cooking oil, rice, and dairy products. These regulations are being enforced through the National Digital Platform for Price Monitoring, which tracks prices across retail platforms to ensure fairness. This platform is expected to protect consumers from price gouging and unfair inflation of basic goods, offering a level of transparency in the marketplace that will reassure the public.
In addition to these initiatives, consumers in Abu Dhabi have been encouraged to report any irregularities or unfair pricing through the Ministry of Economy’s dedicated hotline, 8001222. This hotline serves as a tool for holding retailers accountable and ensuring that the Ramadan discounts are passed on to consumers as intended. The ministry has also emphasized that any violation of the price control measures will be met with legal action, reinforcing the importance of protecting consumer rights during this crucial time. The efforts reflect a commitment to safeguarding both the economy and the well-being of residents throughout the holy month of Ramadan.
