FSQC Bans ‘Shtine’ Bottled Water After Contamination Report

MUSCAT: Oman’s Food Safety and Quality Centre (FSQC) has recently taken action to protect public health by banning the import of ‘Shtine’ bottled drinking water. This decision came in response to the Saudi Food and Drug Authority’s (SFDA) order to withdraw the product from the local market in Saudi Arabia. The withdrawal was prompted by the discovery that the water contained excessive levels of bromate, a chemical that is often formed during the disinfection process of water. Bromate is considered harmful, especially in large quantities, and its presence in drinking water poses potential health risks.

In an official statement released on Friday, the FSQC confirmed that it had taken all necessary measures to prevent the import of the affected product through the country’s border crossings. The authorities emphasized their commitment to safeguarding public health by preventing harmful products from entering the local market. They also noted that efforts are underway to ensure that any remaining supplies of ‘Shtine’ water in local markets are identified and removed, in coordination with relevant authorities, to avoid any potential harm to consumers.

The FSQC’s swift action comes as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain high standards of food safety and product quality in Oman. The presence of contaminants in food and water products is a serious concern for regulatory bodies, and ensuring that such products are removed from the market is a crucial step in protecting the public. The FSQC’s role is not only to enforce import bans but also to work proactively with stakeholders to ensure that safe products are available to the population. Their commitment to transparency and vigilance in handling these situations is evident in the response to this specific case.

The decision to ban the import of ‘Shtine’ bottled water highlights the importance of thorough monitoring and testing of imported products. While such incidents are rare, they serve as a reminder of the need for constant oversight and regulation in the food and beverage sector. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about such recalls and to always verify the safety of the products they purchase. The FSQC assures the public that it will continue to work closely with other authorities to ensure that the highest standards of safety are maintained in the market.
