KARACHI: In a coordinated operation spearheaded by the Pakistani government, 318 citizens stranded in Syria due to recent turmoil safely landed at Islamabad International Airport on Thursday. The successful evacuation was made possible with significant assistance from Lebanon, ensuring the safety and well-being of affected individuals.
The stranded Pakistanis were first moved to Lebanon following the escalation of violence in Syria. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif played a crucial role by personally engaging with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who facilitated visa issuance and supported the evacuation process. Pakistan’s ambassador to Lebanon oversaw the departure of evacuees from Beirut Airport.
Upon arrival in Islamabad, passengers were warmly received by Minister Ahsan Iqbal, along with representatives from various government departments, including the NDMA and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Special arrangements, including transportation to respective destinations and refreshments, were provided to ensure their comfort and convenience.
The evacuation became necessary after a sudden offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrew Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, marking a significant shift in the region. During his reception speech, Ahsan Iqbal expressed gratitude to Lebanon and commended PM Shehbaz’s leadership, highlighting his dedication to protecting Pakistani nationals abroad.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office emphasized the nation’s commitment to supporting Syria’s sovereignty and stressed the importance of allowing the Syrian people to determine their own future without foreign interference. This operation showcased Pakistan’s unwavering support for its citizens and its proactive approach in times of crisis.
